Why attend?
Once you understand how the accounting elements interact to tell the financial story of your business, you will make more informed decisions and realise how value is created within your business. You will gain confidence to ask the right financial questions knowing that they will be appropriate. This will improve the way you run your business, thereby increase the value of you and your business.

Who should attend?
This workshop is applicable and accessible to anyone on any level who needs a complete understanding of the accounting function. Understanding accounting is vital to the success of your business. It is essential to be able to ask the right financial questions, understand the answers and make the right decisions.

"Colour Accounting™ has the advantage of showing how accounting works visually. We all tend to see problems and relationships more easily visually, so the Colour Accounting™ approach takes advantage of how we learn most effectively. As such, I believe that it is of value to anyone who is interested in understanding how accounting works (from high school students to undergrads to MBAs to business executives.)"

Professor Paul Healy
Head of Accounting & Management Unit, Harvard Business School

What is the course about?
A revolutionary breakthrough in accounting literacy which uses Colour Accounting™ to show how accounting works visually. Colour Accounting™ removes the fear associated with the understanding and interpretation of balance sheets, income statements and accounting jargon.
By the end of this 1-day workshop you will be able to read, analyse and interpret financial statements. This dynamic and interactive workshop will enable you to see business differently, with insight and understanding. It will transform your financial knowledge and will empower you with business acumen for life.

Our Approach
When you understand financial information, you can make better business decisions and thereby make more money, save time or generally feel a sense of confidence when talking about numbers to people who are financially trained.

By understanding where the numbers come from in your businesses, you better understand the business itself. Or put differently, accounting is the platform upon which financial and then business literacy is built.

This workshop is designed to lay down a 'platform of understanding' so that business acumen can be built upon. Once you understand accounting concepts such as:

  • revenue recognition,
  • what profit really is,
  • how assets differ from expenses,
  • how cash is different to income,
  • what equity is, and so on ...

... then you can readily understand business concepts such as:

  • return on investment
  • profit maximisation
  • how to increase return on shareholder's equity by
    • increasing the velocity of revenue
    • reducing expenses and increasing margins
    • use of leverage
  • managing cash flow as a separate issue to managing profitability.

You can quickly and painlessly see financial information differently to make better decisions. And it's those decisions that can have a positive impact on results: profit, cash flows and investment.

You will progress through three levels of learning:

TELLING THE STORY OF THE BUSINESS FROM ITS NUMBERS

• Introduction to the key characters: assets, liabilities and equity

• A closer look at the nature of each element

• The value cycle of a business

THE STORY IN ACTION

Structure -
a framework for telling a financial story

Language -
demystifying the jargon e.g. accruals, depreciation

Movement -
numbers in action

APPLICATION OF LEARNING

• Interpreting financial statements - balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement

• Understanding key financial ratios

• Judging a company's performance: good, bad or other?
